Hi all,
So the main difference between CQ Researcher and eLibrary is that CQ Research writes original content for all of the articles it publishes. They do not simply buy the rights to republish articles that have been written for other publications – which is what most databases do – including eLibrary.
One of the pitfalls about CQ Researcher is that the company does not update the articles once they are published, so the information is a bit static. While eLibrary does not update the articles they republish, there are usually many other more current articles in the database that deal with the same topic.

For assignment #5, review CQ Researcher and eLibrary. Both of these online databases are great research tools. However, there are a few substantial differences relating to how information presented in CQ Researcher vs. eLibrary. Review these databases closely and identify at least two of these differences. After you identify them, explain which database you think is better for academic research.
CQ Researcher is very modern and up to date. it’s got a column on it’s homepage of the most recent reports in the media today.
eLibrary is dull and the homepage is boring but straight to the point. the only thing left to do on it is research which is what one comes to do.
on CQ Researcher it’s very tempting to waste one’s time because one becomes curious of what is being said on the latest issues: such as human rights in China and the nation’s recent news.
eLibrary helps one to focus more since there is nothing on its homepage to distract one’s attention.
i think for academic research that eLibrary is better. my topic is not in the news so CQ Researcher was not helpful at all. when i did a search for my topic on eLibrary, it returned many articles and most of them were helpful in giving me other sources i could turn to.

CQ Researcher is a database that has very current articles and is visually appealing. Its home page is covered with current reports and pretty pictures. Its researching capabilities, in my opinion, are quite limited to current articles.
eLibrary is not as visually appealing, and presents more of the essential things needed for searching for a topic. I also feel that its searching options and capabilities are much greater than that of CQ Researcher.
When researching my topic on CQ Researcher, I couldn’t find anything on my topic. I guess it’s because my topic is in no way recent. I’m going to give eLibrary my ‘thumbs up’. It may not be fancy, but it gets the job done. I found several articles useful on eLibrary.

In looking at the two databases, the first difference that comes to mind is that CQ Researcher contains original articles that are researched and written by journalists whereas eLibrary is a resource for full-text magazines, newspapers, books, transcripts, maps, pictures and audio/files. CQ researcher is providing a research paper on relevant topics complete with bibliographies. One can only search through the CQ Researcher article database. In eLibrary, one can choose to limit search results to any of or all of the following resources: audio/video files, transcripts, full-text magazine articles, newspapers, books, maps or pictures.
In my opinion, eLibrary is a much better resource for doing academic research since it has access to resources that would be needed to do academic research i.e. scholarly journals, book, etc. While the articles in CQ Researcher are written by journalists and may not cover the topics required by the research topic. I was not able to find any relevant information on my topic in CQ Researcher. I found a number of useful information using eLibrary.

CQ does have a lot more graphics, but I find the sections confusing. the article i looked up in the overview talked about heart disease and how diet was a big problem, but in the pro/con section it was talking about smoking. It is nice that it also points to other related articles. The e-library makes it easy to find articles in different formats, and clearly distinguishes scholarly journals from the list. I prefer elibrary because it is more to the point of the article, and because it clearly distinguishes scholarly articles from the rest.
