LIBR105 Discussion Question #5 (Due Monday, October 6th)

Filed under: Uncategorized — fink2ink @ 12:26 am

Hi all,

So the main difference between CQ Researcher and eLibrary is that CQ Research writes original content for all of the articles it publishes.  They do not simply buy the rights to republish articles that have been written for other publications – which is what most databases do – including eLibrary.

One of the pitfalls about CQ Researcher is that the company does not update the articles once they are published, so the information is a bit static.  While eLibrary does not update the articles they republish, there are usually many other more current articles in the database that deal with the same topic.

*****

For assignment #5, review CQ Researcher and eLibrary. Both of these online databases are great research tools. However, there are a few substantial differences relating to how information presented in CQ Researcher vs. eLibrary. Review these databases closely and identify at least two of these differences. After you identify them, explain which database you think is better for academic research.

Here is the link:

<http://lib.colostate.edu/tutorials/boolean_info.html>

The tutorial takes three to five minutes to complete.

Experiment with the Boolean operators – AND, OR, NOT – to search for information relating to the following question using a popular Internet search engine.

In your opinion, who has been the most powerful or influential vice president in the history of the United States?  Be sure to explain why.

What is your answer? How did your search results change when you experimented with different Boolean search strategies? Which Boolean operator seems to work best for you?
